By designers for designers—Formerly Known is a Los Angeles-based type foundry founded by Paul Hutchison and Ross Burwell of Hype Type Studio. Each typeface within our catalogue was developed to fill a hole in our studio design work, and that unique perspective fuels the direction for everything we produce as a foundry. We draw inspiration from experimental approaches, constantly exploring new techniques and formats to challenge the standards of type design.

The Formerly Known Inclusive License is a single, all-encompassing EULA covering print and digital, and everything in between. Our aim was to make licensing our fonts as straightforward as possible. No unnecessary restrictions. No superfluous limits. Just fair pricing tiers based on the end user's company size.

The entire Formerly Known catalogue is available as trial fonts to evaluate and test our fonts before purchasing. Our trial fonts are free to use in client presentations, pitches and student projects.

The trial fonts are delivered as a single package in OTF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 file formats, with full character sets and OpenType features to allow for full testing capabilities across all media types. Variable fonts are also included when available.

We offer custom typeface design services, providing clients with the option to customize existing fonts from our catalogue or opt for an entirely bespoke typeface design tailored to their unique needs. We've created typefaces for clients of all scales, including Nike, Therabody, Nasa, Ron Herman, and Surf Ranch.
